Pungent Vinegar-Like Smell
Glacial acetic acid refers to an undiluted solution of acetic acid (CH;COOH). Acetic acid is also known as
ethanoic acid or ethylic acid. It’s a clear liquid, with a pungent vinegar-like smell. It can dissolve both non-
polar compounds, as well as polar compounds, such as salts and inorganic sugars. It mixes well with polar
and non-polar solvents, including chloroform, hexane and water.
From a chemical point of view, it’s considered a weak acid, due to the release of protons (H) into solution.
For example, vinegar (containing approximately 8% acetic acid in volume) has a pH between 2.5 and 4.
One of acetic acid’s most well-known reactions is the popular reaction between vinegar (containing acetic
acid) and baking soda (NaHCO3). The reaction produces metal acetate, carbon dioxide and water in such an
explosive fashion that has become every student’s favourite in chemistry lessons.
Acetic acid also reacts with zinc, iron and magnesium, being considered a mild corrosive agent for these
chemicals. For this reason, for large volumes, it’s usually stored in aluminium tanks or glass containers for
